Identity verification for GDAX registration

GDAX requires two identity verification steps for all customers. These verifications are requested during the on-boarding process and are required prior to depositing funds or trading.

Verification requirements for US customers

1. Document upload

For customers in the US, a driver's license or state ID are accepted forms of ID. We cannot accept a passport for identity verification, because it does not indicate your state of residence. State residency is required for compliance and regulatory reasons.

2. Residential address and SSN

You must provide your residential address and Social Security number (SSN) during the GDAX registration process. If you have trouble, please refer to the troubleshooting tips at the end of this article. Unfortunately if you are not able to complete the identity verification requirements, you will not be able to trade on GDAX. We are not able to manually bypass any requirements for customers.

ID requirements for customers in the UK

1. Document snapshot

Government identification such as an ID document, Driver's License, or Passport is accepted.

2. Verification questions

You will be asked questions to verify your identity against national identification databases.

ID requirements for customers in all other countries (Australia, Canada, Singapore, and European countries)

1 and 2: Document upload (two different documents)

In these countries we require two Identification documents.

Acceptable documentation includes:

  • Passport
  • Driver's License
  • National ID card

Below are some suggestions for troubleshooting any issues you may have with these verifications.
Unfortunately, we have no manual processes for circumventing these requirements. If you are unable to complete them, you will be unable to use GDAX at this time.

Document Upload

If you are having difficulty successfully uploading a passport, driver's license or state ID, please ensure the following:
  • You have a webcam and Adobe Flash is enabled in your browser
  • The document is not expired or considerably damaged
  • The image is clear and all borders of the document are fully visible
  • The image is bright and well lit
  • There is no glare on the document

90% of customers are able to resolve issues with ID verification by taking a snapshot using Coinbase's mobile app with the camera on their mobile phone. Once the app is installed, go to "Settings", then "Identity Verification".

Do not send images of your ID to us via email. It will not be accepted and is not secure.

Address verification

There are several reasons why the identity verification process may fail.
  • If you have recently changed your address or made other changes in your identifying information. (For US residents you may have received a new Social Security Number, for example)
  • Your personal information must appear exactly as it does on official documents (i.e. your legal name, not a nickname, etc.).
  • We also may not have enough information on record to sufficiently verify your identity at this time. This unfortunately affects our younger customers more often.
